Chocolate Fever |
|
We participated in Chocolate Stories 2005, a collaborative Internet project created by Susan Silverman and Marci McGowan. We were excited to read Chocolate Fever by Robert Kimmel Smith. In the story, a boy named Henry Green loves to eat chocolate. He eats chocolate cake for breakfast, chocolate-bar sandwiches for snack, and sprinkles chocolate on noodles and mashed potatoes for dinner! In fact, Henry Green eats so much chocolate that he breaks out in big brown spots all over and comes down with a case of chocolate fever. Before we finished reading the story, first grade students enjoyed brainstorming cures for chocolate fever. During writers workshop, students wrote and illustrated creative cures for this yummy smelling disease. Mrs. McDowell published our cures in a powerpoint presentation.
We also tried to catch chocolate fever by hosting a chocolate taste test! Students tasted Kit Kats, Snickers, Twix, and M&M's. Afterwards, we graphed our results by drawing pictures of our favorite chocolate and creating a physical graph on the floor using the candy bar wrappers. To publish our graph, we visited The Student's Classroom, a website created by National Center for Educational Statistics. On the website, we were able to quickly create a bar graph and a pie chart to display the information we gathered. Here are the graphs we created:
After we created the pie chart, we colored paper plates to replicate the computer generated graph. It was a very yummy project. Comments? Questions? |
