Fall Fun

The Leaf Dance

Red and yellow, green and brown,

Orange and rust and tan.

I can do the leaf dance, the leaf dance,

yes, I can!

I am floating to the ground.

The air is like a fan.

I can do the leaf dance, the leaf dance,

yes I can!

Activities:

Read the poem chorally as a class.  Practice echo reading and using different types of voices to increase fluency.  Talk about personification.  Can leaves really dance?  Is it a good way to describe how a leaf falls to the ground?  Have children pretend to be leaves and dance.

Leaf Collage

Materials:

11x17 white construction paper

leaf tracers

red, green, brown, and yellow markers

paint brushes

water

Directions:

Students choose a leaf tracer and trace it onto the paper with a marker using thick lines.  Afterwards, the students add veins inside the leaf.  Students continue to trace leaves overlapping them slightly.  Then, the student brushes their picture with water and the colors bleed softly like water color paints.  When the projects are dry, cut out around the leaves and mount them on fall colored construction paper for a fall bulletin board display.

Leaf Crowns

Materials:

Collection of fall leaves or leaf tracers

sentence strips

 Directions:

Have students glue leaves on a sentence strip to create a fall leaf crown.  I live in Texas, so we generally use leaf tracers and cut leaves out of fall colored construction paper.  Wear your crowns and visit another class to recite The Leaf Dance.

Johnny Appleseed

Crockpot Applesauce

Materials:

10-12 peeled and cored apples

sugar

honey

cinnamon

crockpot

plastic knives

Directions:

Have students chop up apples into little tiny pieces.  Add them to the crockpot.  Add sugar, honey, and cinnamon to taste.  Cook all day in the classroom!

Optional: Some teachers choose to add red hots for a spicer version!

Johnny Appleseed Prayer

O, the Lord is good to me,

And so I thank the Lord,

For giving me the things I need,

The sun and the rain and the appleseed.

The Lord is good to me.

Amen

Apple Experiment

Materials:

1 apple cut into 3 sections

grape juice

lemon juice

water

cups

Directions:

What will help keep the apples from turning brown?  Place one apple slice in a cup of water, lemon juice, and grape juice.  Observe the slices throughout the day to find out which liquid preserves the apple slices the best.  Have students draw pictures and take notes on their observations.

The Secret Inside the Apple

Read the story of The Little Red House with No Doors and No Windows and a Star InsideAfterwards cut the apple in half to reveal the secret.   Have students make apple prints in red and green paint.
