Torn Paper Candy Corn Art
*This a great activity for the art center!
Materials: yellow, orange, and white construction paper, file folder or cardboard, glue
Teacher Preparation: Cut out several candy corn shapes out of a file folder or heavy cardboard for children to use. Place yellow, orange, and white construction paper, pencils, scissors, glue, and a small dish of real candy corn in the center.
Student Directions: Use the candy corn tracer to trace the candy corn shape on to a white piece of paper. Cut out your shape. Examine a real piece of candy corn. Divide your candy corn shape into three sections with your pencil. Then, tear yellow, orange, and white construction paper into tiny pieces. Glue the pieces onto your candy corn shape to make it look like real candy corn! When you are finished, you may eat three pieces of candy corn!
Lesson Extension: Use the candy corn art to talk about fractions.
Candy Corn Fun in the Math Center
Objective: Design and continue a three part pattern.
Materials: candy corn, cheerios, pretzel sticks
Teacher Preparation: Place bowls of candy corn, cheerios, and pretzel sticks in the math center. Place long strips of black or orange construction paper, pencils, and glue at the center.
Student Directions: Make a pattern by gluing the candy corn, cheerios, and pretzel sticks onto the construction paper.
*Sometimes, I will place pattern strips in the center for the students to follow. For example, the student would pick a pattern strip from a can and then replicate that type of pattern. (ABC, AABC, AABB...)
Candy Corn is also great to use as a non-standard unit of measurement!
Objective: Measure various objects using candy corn.
Materials: Candy corn, various items from around the classroom like scissors, pencils, string, straw, popsicle stick, center card, clothespin, paint brush, etc.
Teacher Preparation: Place a bowl of candy corn and a tray containing items to measure in the math center. Numbering the items with masking tape makes it easy for students to record their results.
Student Directions: Measure each item with the candy corn. Record your results.
