Mrs. McDowell's Homework Policy

Homework is a time for your child to shine and show you what he or she is learning in school. In first grade, the purpose of homework is to help your child develop organizational skills, learn responsibility, and reinforce skills introduced in school.  It is also a time to involve the parent in the academic progress.  Your child's homework assignment should take no more than 15-20 minutes to complete.  If your child has tried his or her best and is still having trouble completing the assignment in a reasonable amount of time, please contact me so that we can get to the root of the problem.  In addition to this assignment, you and your child need to spend 15 minutes reading each night. I also recommend practicing spelling words each night to prepare for tests on Friday. It is also beneficial to review fact families throughout the week for 5-7 minutes a day.

Here are some helpful things to remember when completing homework together:

  • All assignments should be completed in pencil. Please do not complete assignments in pen.

  • Keep scissors, glue, crayons, and pencils handy.  Some assignments will ask students to color or will require glue and scissors.

  • Read the homework packet at the beginning of the week.

  • Homework assignments must be returned on time in order for students to receive full credit for the assignment.

  • All homework must be completed and returned on time for the student to receive the reward at the end of the week.
