Pennies From Our Past

This is a fun book to do when you are studying money!  It is a great way to get families involved in what we are learning at school. Kindergartners and first graders love to examine coins with magnifying glasses and do coin rubbings. This book is a wonderful extension of these discovery experiences!

Dear Families,

In math, first grade has been working with money.  We have enjoyed sorting, graphing, identifying, and exploring pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.  First grade especially enjoyed examining coins with magnifying glasses.

To enrich our study of money, we would like to make a class book called “A Penny From Your Past, ” but we need your help!  With your first grader, please look at the dates on pennies.  Help your child find one that was made in a year since he or she was born.  Have your student write 2-3 sentences about something that happened in his or her life that year.   Use the recording sheet attached to this letter.

I have also included a couple extra recording sheets because I would like to encourage you to make this a family event.  We would love it if parents, grandparents, and/or siblings would participate too by finding a penny from their past and writing about it!

We look forward to hearing about the pennies in your past!  Thanks for helping make learning about money such a memorable and fun event!

Have fun!
